Mosquitoes carry diseases like Zika that can put your life at risk, so why let them bite you when you can prevent them from spreading? Here are some proactive solutions to combat mosquitoes.

Deny Mosquitoes Access to their Breeding Ground

Mosquitoes need water for their eggs to hatch. As a result, most types of mosquitoes tend to breed and lay their eggs in standing water or near the waterline so the eggs will hatch when rain brings the water level higher. One simple way to improve your mosquito solution is to go around the entire yard and house with a fine-tooth comb and combat standing water wherever you find it. Remember that water can pool in all sorts of unexpected places, such as gutters, certain plants, and half-empty bottles.

If you come across a pond that you cannot get rid of, treat it instead. There are several ways to treat these bodies of water. You can use products like Mosquito Dunks or go the natural route and use coffee grounds or crushed garlic.

Use Candles and Lanterns to Drive Mosquitoes Away from Your House

Whenever you are going to sit in the patio, you can light candles containing citronella or lanterns with certain essential oils. It will not get rid of everything, but it does help.

Mosquitoes do not like certain herbs and plants. Armed with this knowledge, you can redesign your patio or yard to make life as uncomfortable for mosquitos as possible. Examples of things mosquitos dislike are:

  • Lemon balm
  • Cloves
  • Citronella
  • Cedarwood
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Lemongrass

Make Use of Traps and Zappers

Believe it or not, there are traps specially made for mosquitos. They work by baiting the unsuspecting mosquito into a closed area where they are caught with adhesives or with nets. Not all types of mosquitoes are easily trapped, which makes it a bit less practical, and you’ll likely need other methods in addition to traps for an effective strategy. Zappers work well. They lure mosquitoes, and like mindless drones, they make their way to the light until they get zapped.

This works by flooding the area with an agent lethal to the mosquitos. This is an effective method, but the problem with it is that it takes a long time. Plus, it is all manual work that you usually must do in the heat. Nowhere near as simple as a mosquito misting system.

Invest in a Mosquito Misting System Solution

Any of these tactics will help. Unfortunately, none of them are going to be a silver bullet. The easiest and most effective method of dealing with mosquitoes is a mosquito misting solution that can be put on a schedule to ensure your yard is free of biting insects. Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE), a very serious and potentially deadly disease transmitted by mosquitoes, was recently detected in chickens in Florida in late July 2019. This disease can affect humans and can result in brain infections, as well as swelling.  Four cases were recorded in Massachusetts, one of which resulted in the death of the patient. Meanwhile, three more cases were suspected in Michigan. With diseases like this on the rise, mosquito prevention is becoming more important than ever.

What are the Symptoms and Treatment?

This disease has an incubation period of four to 10 days and can result in either a system or an encephalitic illness, depending on host factors. Sometimes, symptoms may not show at all. People over the age of 50 and under the age of 15 are at the highest risk of developing the severe disease.

mosquito preventionA systemic infection tends to last a couple of weeks and is accompanied by fever, arthralgia, and chills. Encephalitic patients, however, tend to have headaches, be restless and irritable as well, as drowsy, and they also may develop:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Cyanosis
  • Convulsions
  • Coma

Even when a person recovers from this disease, they tend to have permanent damage ranging from small to severe mental impairment. Some people will develop seizures or paralysis and nerve dysfunction. Usually, about 30 percent of people infected will die within two to 10 days after the symptoms have manifested.

There is no real treatment, no vaccine, or antiviral treatment. The best that doctors can offer is supportive treatment, such as IV fluids. In other words, if you get bitten by one of these mosquitoes, you have a one in three chance of not surving, and if you do, you will carry debilitating and impairing symptoms for the rest of your life. So why take a chance when there is a simple way to keep safe?

eliminate mosquitoesWhat Can You Do to Keep Safe?

There really is only one course of action which is to eliminate mosquitoes. To do this, you may want to clear out your yard, clear out your gutters, and make sure there is no standing water left untreated. The fewer the number of places mosquitoes have where they can breed and live, the fewer mosquitoes you will have to deal with. The most effective way to control the mosquito population, however, is using a mosquito misting system, as this can be the ultimate weapon against biting insects.

How many different species/types of mosquitoes are there? There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes in the world, and they transmit more diseases than any other living thing. There are many different types of maladies transmitted by mosquitoes. Some of the more common mosquito diseases include:

  • Dengue
  • Malaria
  • West Nile virus
  • Barmah Forest fever
  • Chikungunya
  • Yellow fever
  • Zika
  • Many types of encephalitis

Some of these can be quite deadly, making mosquitoes an important threat to anyone’s health.

Every type of mosquito goes through four stages in their lives: egg, larva, pupa, and imago. It is important to note that the first three stages are aquatic, as such, reducing standing areas of standing water is advised for mosquito control. The length of each stage depends on temperature and species characteristics. For example, the Culex tarasis might go through its lifecycle in 14 days at 70º F and only 10 days at 80º.

common mosquito diseasesOut of the many different species of mosquitoes, there are three that stand out because they are primarily responsible for the spread of human disease. The three (3) most common types of mosquito species that carry diseases are Aedes mosquitoes, Anopheles mosquitoes, and Culex mosquitoes.

Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes

Aedes is a mosquito originally found in tropical and subtropical areas – now it was spread throughout the world. In the last few years, we have heard quite a bit from this flying pest, as it is the primary species known to transmit viruses like Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya.

Anopheles Genera

Another type of mosquito is the Anopheles Genera. Anopheles mosquitoes usually look for slow-moving or standing water to lay their eggs, and they can lay anywhere from 50 to 200 eggs at a time. Although the eggs usually hatch a few days after being laid, it can take up to three weeks in cold temperatures. Once an adult, unlike most other species, the female Anopheles can transmit malaria.

Culex might not carry malaria, but it has been known to serve as a vector for some of the more important diseases in both humans and animals. While Anopheles lay their eggs in a single file and separate, the Culex mosquitoes lay them in clusters. Another difference is that, as a larva, the Culex is a bottom feeder, unlike the Anopheles that feeds on the surface. The Culex is overall stouter and capable of longer flight.

With all these diseases literally flying around, how do you fight back? Mosquito control can be achieved with a mosquito misting system. Wouldn’t it be nice if mosquitoes didn’t exist at all? Or, at the very least, came only during a specific season? Unfortunately, that is not the case. mosquitoes are not only a threat in the summer. While there may be some months out of the year where the population increases even more than usual due to the higher volume of rain, mosquitoes are a legion the entire year.

Mosquitoes Are a Yearlong Battle

mosquito misting systemLiving in Florida, mosquitoes are a year-long problem. Having so many canals, lakes, and large bodies of slow-moving or standing water, coupled with the fact that we have rain all year round, it is almost impossible to step out of the house and not encounter this pest. Even if you have home mosquito control systems, your neighbor might have standing water all over his yard, making it easy for mosquitoes to cross over to your space. With such a long mosquito season, investing in mosquito prevention and removal is a must for Florida homeowners.

Mosquitoes Are Not Just Annoying, They Are Dangerous

Mosquitoes are certainly an annoyance. No one likes going into the yard to get bitten from head to toe and dealing with itching scratching. If that were the extent of the threat, we would probably not care so much about finding the perfect method to eliminate mosquitoes. Given the severity of the diseases, mosquitoes can transmit to humans, it would be irresponsible not to consider effective mosquito removal solutions.

effective mosquito misting systemIt seems that every year there is a new outbreak of some lethal disease, and at the center of it, we always find the mosquito as the main culprit. For example, there’s been a recent outbreak of the deadly Eastern equine encephalitis disease this year. Diseases that were once remote and almost forgotten – like Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and encephalitis – have almost become commonplace. Because of this, having an effective mosquito misting system is becoming more of a necessity and less of a luxury.
